To the surprise of no one, the Republicans’ four-year partisan inquisition surrounding the terrorist attack on the American compound in Benghazi, Libya - the conspiracy theory has ended in a crash and burn catastrophe . With the House Select Committee on Benghazi finally releasing its findings, and the report representing the eighth and (likely) final government investigation into the deadly event, the Benghazi hoax, as sponsored by Fox News for four years, finally comes to an impotent and ignominious end.

This latest report has provided nothing, a total of 15 million dollars of tax payers dollars wasted on a witch-hunt - which was to derail a Clinton bid for presidency.

BENGHAZI, THE SCANDAL THAT WASN'T




So if Benghazi wasn't used as an election year theatrics against the Democrats, what has been the point of committee chairman Trey Gowdy’s lame assed extended inquiry?

Anybody with an IQ above -500 realized that the final GOP Benghazi report, with its 2016 summertime release, was designed to disrupt Clinton’s White House run. Why else would the committee’s work be extended for two-plus years when it likely could have been completed in six or seven months?

The whole fiasco, partisan in nature, shines a light on what’s completely fucked-up with the Republican Party and the right-wing media. It’s about how shallow, endlessly debunked conspiracies and money-sucking investigations have replaced any attempt to to be honest Americans who's job is to govern and legislate.

MADDOW EVICERATES TEABAGGERS FOR “ONE BIG HILARIOUS JOKE”

A visibly irritated Rachel Maddow slammed House Republicans on Thursday for their handling of the Benghazi commission investigation, calling it a first for congressional probes of its kind.

“Republicans have turned it all into one big hilarious partisan joke,” she said. “If God loves America, we will find out soon that somewhere there is a reset button that we can hit after this is over to erase this as a potential precedent for our country moving forward.”

Maddow explained that the GOP members on the commission were fixated on criticizing former Secretary of State for convening an accountability review board following the fatal 2012 attack, ignoring that she was required to do so under a law signed by Republican icon Ronald Reagan during his presidency.

The law came into effect following a chain of attacks against US troops in Lebanon, she said, beginning with a December 1983 bombing inside a Marine barracks in Beirut that killed 241 service members. And in the investigations since, partisanship was seen as “repellent and unwelcome.” But no longer.

“We have never had a congressional partisan carnival like this over an attack on a US outpost overseas — never,” Maddow said. “In the history of Beirut, in the history of Khobar Towers, of the East Africa embassy bombings, of the 9/11 commission, even, of the attack on the USS Cole,on even the intelligence leading up to the Iraq war.”

TREY GOWDY, FULL OF MORE SHIT THAN A CHRISTMAS TURKEY

Trey Gowdy, the chair of the Select Committee on Benghazi, has at times aligned some very serious charge against Hillary Clinton in an October 7 letter. Gowdy asserted that Hillary Clinton disclosed the name of CIA source in an email sent from her private server. Gowdy wrote that the information was “some of the most protected information in our intelligence community, the release of which could jeopardize not only national security but human lives.”

The Washington Examiner covered the story with this headline: “Clinton burns CIA Libya contact.”

This does not appear to be true.

A letter from Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the committee, reveals that the CIA reviewed the email in question and found that the information in question was not classified.

Cummings said that Gowdy’s accusation was “irresponsible” and suggested he owes “an immediate apology” to Hillary Clinton.

In response, Gowdy acknowledged the CIA’s view but said that “the name of the alleged source was redacted from the material cleared for public release by someone in the Executive Branch.” Cummings explained that the name was redacted “not for classification reasons, but to protect the individual’s privacy and avoid bringing additional undue attention to this person.”

The dustup comes on the heels of a number of embarrassing revelations from the Benghazi committee. Republican Major Leader Kevin McCarthy bragged that the committee had successfully driven down Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers. Another Republican Congressman, Mark Hanna, said the committee was “designed to go after” Clinton.

Clinton is scheduled to testify in front of the committee this week.

RICHARD HANNA CONFIRMS BENGHAZI WITCH-HUNT

A second House Republican has now conceded that the overarching purpose of the House Select Committee on Benghazi has been to attack former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In September, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy argued that one of House Republicans’ successes has been using the Benghazi Committee to drive down Clinton’s poll numbers. Though McCarthy tried to walk back his controversial comments, Rep. Richard Hanna argued on Wednesday that the Majority Leader had it right to begin with.

“Sometimes the biggest sin you can commit in D.C. is to tell the truth,” Hanna said in an interview on Keeler in the Morning, a radio show in upstate New York. The third-term congressman paused for a moment, perhaps recognizing the importance of what he was about to say, before going on to agree with McCarthy’s original statement.

“This may not be politically correct, but I think that there was a big part of this investigation that was designed to go after people and an individual, Hillary Clinton,” Hanna said.

He explained further why he believes the Benghazi Committee’s purpose has been in part to attack Clinton. “After what Kevin McCarthy said, it’s difficult to accept at least a part of it was not,” Hanna said. “I think that’s the way Washington works. But you’d like to expect more from a committee that’s spent millions of dollars and tons of time.”

For years, House Republicans had claimed the Benghazi probe was about investigating the events surrounding the 2012 attack in Libya that left four Americans dead, including U.S.

Ambassador Chris Stevens, rather than undermining Clinton’s potential presidential bid.

But after McCarthy’s Kinsley gaffe, which was among the factors that doomed his seemingly-inevitable rise to the House Speakership, and now Hanna’s admission, there is growing doubt even among GOPers about the Benghazi Committee’s true purpose.

McCarthy and Hanna aren’t the only Republicans to publicly declare that the Benghazi Committee has been on a partisan quest. Over the weekend, Maj. Bradley Podliska, a Republican investigator formerly working on the Committee, revealed that he had lost his job for refusing to solely focus his investigation on Clinton. Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), who heads the Committee, denies the charge.

Clinton is set to testify before the Committee, which has now continued longer than the Watergate probe, on October 22nd.

The Truth Hurts: Benghazi Report Concludes No Wrongdoing By Obama Administration

The House Intelligence Committee has reported that Obama and his staff did no wrong in Benghazi, but will this stop the Tin Foil Hat Society from wasting more tax dollars on their witch-hunt?




As Media Matters reported, this should change the media's approach to Rep. Trey Gowdy's select committee on Benghazi and the Republicans wasting even more of our tax dollars on their Benghazi witch hunt, but we know that's never going to happen.

From Steve Benen: Yet another setback for Benghazi conspiracy theorists:

The House Intelligence Committee is among the many congressional panels to investigate the deadly attack on the U.S. outpost in Benghazi in 2012, and its findings are reportedly complete. The committee’s report is not yet available, but Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) talked to the San Francisco Chronicle about the results of the inquiry.

The House Intelligence Committee, led by Republicans, has concluded that there was no deliberate wrongdoing by the Obama administration in the 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, said Rep. Mike Thompson of St. Helena, the second-ranking Democrat on the committee. […]

Thompson said the report “confirms that no one was deliberately misled, no military assets were withheld and no stand-down order (to U.S. forces) was given.”

The committee agreed Thursday to declassify its report, nearly two years in the making, and the findings will reportedly be available to the public once it’s cleared by intelligence agencies.

Just so we’re clear, this is a Republican-led committee, with GOP members outnumbering Democrats, 12 to 9.

And according to the Chronicle’s report, the committee’s findings are consistent with everything reality has told us all along: “There was no ‘stand-down order’ given to American personnel attempting to offer assistance that evening, no illegal activity or illegal arms transfers occurring by U.S. personnel in Benghazi, and no American was left behind.”

What’s more, the Obama administration’s process for developing “talking points” was “flawed, but the talking points reflected the conflicting intelligence assessments in the days immediately following the crisis.”

It would appear some Republican lawmakers who've spent 23 months screaming the exact opposite owe the public an explanation for why they were wrong.

If history is any indication, Numbnutz Darrell Issa and Trey Gowdy will continue wasting time and money on this until they is no longer a congressman.

TREY GOWDY, TODAY'S WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

The top Republican leading the House Select Committee on Benghazi is urging his colleagues against using the issue as a fundraising ploy, but the congressman has himself discussed the supposed Benghazi scandal at fundraisers and campaign events.

House Speaker John Boehner last week finally relented to the House GOP caucus’s right wing and agreed to appoint a special committee to launch more investigations into the Obama administration’s handling of the September, 2012 attack, and tasked Rep. Trey Gowdy to lead the panel.

Gowdy on Wednesday called on other Republicans to refrain from fundraising off Benghazi because he said the issue “transcends politics.” Yet just minutes prior to his comments, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) sent out a fundraising email using Gowdy and his committee as the hook. “You’re now a Benghazi Watchdog. Let’s go after Obama and Hillary Clinton,” it says, offering readers an opportunity to donate.

Gowdy later said the NRCC should stop the campaign. “I cannot and will not raise money on Benghazi,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

But that hasn’t always been the case. Last September, Gowdy attended a “barbecue fundraiser” for Rep. Mick Mulvaney in Indian Land, SC and according to local newspaper the Lancaster News, Gowdy talked Benghazi with attendees:

Gowdy addressed the issue of “phony scandals,” in which the government is describing the scandals surrounding the IRS and NSA as fake, or phony. 

Referring to the scandal surrounding the murders of four American citizens in the Benghazi attacks, Gowdy said this is not the case. 

“It is a scandal,” he said. “But it is not a phony scandal.” 

Gowdy said these scandals begin to chip away at the public’s trust in their government. 

“There is nothing phony about (citizens) not trusting the people they put in positions of leadership,” he said.

Two weeks later, Gowdy spoke at a campaign event for Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) where he, according to the Greenville News, praised Graham on Benghazi (accessed via LexisNexis):

Friday morning at Furman, Gowdy shared the credit on the Benghazi issue with Graham, telling students, “There is no one in Congress who has done more on the issue of Benghazi than your senior senator.” 

Gowdy also said [Rep. Jason] Chaffetz has done more than anyone else in the House to hold Obama accountable on Benghazi. Gowdy and Chaffetz attended a private fundraiser for Chaffetz at a Greenville home Thursday night.

Given that the House Republican efforts so far to bring down the Obama administration on Benghazi have come up empty, it’s unlikely that Gowdy’s committee will reveal anything new.

Thus, the reality is that for Republicans and their right-wing media and Tea Party allies, the Benghazi tragedy that resulted in four Americans and a U.S. Ambassador being killed is at this point nothing more than a way to raise money.
