Rick Perry's continued insistence that we need a travel ban on flights from West Africa to stop Ebola from spreading to the United States on Chris Hayes' show this Friday evening while discussing the appointment of the new "Ebola czar" Ron Klain.

Texas Governor Rick Perry warned a packed DC audience at DC’s Heritage Foundation headquarters Thursday that without swift action, terrorists from groups like the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) will “slip across our un-secure border.” In a speech linking the immigration reform debate to the current crisis in Iraq, Perry claimed there is “a very real possibility” that terrorists have already entered the country by crossing the desert from Mexico.

Perry cited only one anecdote to back up this claim: the recent detention at the border of a Ukrainian national. But she wasn’t a terrorist. She was the wife of a US marine.

Still, he maintained, the possibility is there. “I think there’s obvious, great concern about the border not being secure and us not knowing who is penetrating across,” he said. “The cartels, as vicious and brutal as they are, might be the least of our worries. What other bad actors are coming here, or for that matter, have arrived already? Where did they come from? What did they bring with them?”

Yet, as Perry himself admitted, there is “no clear evidence” of anyone affiliated with terrorism ever crossing the US/Mexico border. Nearly every attack or failed plot over the past decade has been carried out by a US citizen—like accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev—or those who came on legal visas, like the Al Qaeda operatives on 9/11. And the cross-border terrorist plans that have been discovered have come from our northern border.

The US State Department’s own terrorism assessment last year noted that “there were no known operational cells of either al-Qa’ida or Hizballah in the hemisphere.” They added:

“There are no known international terrorist organizations operating in Mexico, and there is no evidence that any terrorist group has targeted U.S. citizens in Mexican territory.”

But Perry continues to cite this fear as the basis for his belief that neither Congress or the President should pursue any type of immigration reform until the US Mexico border is “secured” using the Border Patrol, the National Guard, and 24-hour surveillance drones.

“Until the federal government meets that duty and secures that border, all talk of immigration reform is pointless,” he said.

Perry’s DC remarks—which swung from immigration to the degenerating conflict in Iraq and his predictions for November’s midterm elections—comes just before a trip to the early primary state of New Hampshire—another in a series of moves that hint at another run for the White House in 2016.

It should be noted that Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby told CNN Friday that he’s seen nothing to back up Perry’s claim. “I’ve seen no indication that they are coming across the border with Mexico,” Kirby said on New Day. “We have no information that leads us to believe that.”

This just in: Rick Perry says he thinks Obama is secretly Voldemort and would have gotten away with it if not for those meddling kids. Zoinks!

"AWESOME" RICK PERRY IS INDICTED FOR PUBLIC CORRUPTION

"AWESOME" RICK INDICTED 

"Awesome" dipshit Rick Perry, Texas’ longstanding tea bagging wing nut governor and a 2012 presidential candidate, is now under indictment. The indictment lays out two counts against the Texas governor, one for “Abuse of Official Capacity” and the other for “Coercion of Public Servant.”

As the Texas Observer explains, this indictment arises out of a dispute over who will hold one of the few Texas offices with statewide power that is still controlled by a Democrat. Rosemary Lehmberg is that Democrat, and she is the District Attorney for Travis County, Texas. Because Travis County includes Austin, the state capital, her office controls a Public Integrity Unit that investigates alleged ethical breaches by state-level politicians. Among other things, that unit investigated the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, which is accused of improperly distributing grant money — including some grant money that was given to people with close ties to Governor Perry.

In April of 2013, however, Lehmberg was arrested for driving while very, very intoxicated. Hours after her arrest, her blood alcohol level was three times above Texas’ legal limit. She eventually pleaded guilty and spent a few weeks in jail. Yet Lehmberg has refused to step down from her role as District Attorney. According to the Observer, this is because she does not want Perry to have the opportunity to replace her with a Republican.

Perry allegedly crossed the line from an eager partisan hoping to replace a powerful official to a governor who broke the law, however, when he threatened to veto funding for the Public Integrity Unit unless Lehmberg resigned — and then he followed through on this threat. According to one count of the indictment, Perry “by means of coercion . . . influenced or attempted to influence Rosemary Lehmberg - in the specific performance of her official duty” — that duty being her obligation “to continue to carry out her responsibilities” as Travis County D.A.

The indictment lists two state laws which Perry allegedly violated. The first is a vague statute prohibiting public servants from “intentionally or knowingly - misusing government property, services, personnel, or any other thing of value belonging to the government that has come into the public servant’s custody or possession by virtue of the public servant’s office or employment.” The second is a somewhat more specific law prohibiting anyone from using coercion to “influence or attempt to influence a public servant in a specific exercise of his official power or a specific performance of his official duty or influence or attempt to influence a public servant to violate the public servant’s known legal duty.”

Even if Perry’s actions fall within these statutes, however, the special prosecutor bringing these charges may need to overcome a significant constitutional obstacle. In a statement released Friday evening, Perry’s attorney claims that “the veto in question was made in accordance with the veto authority afforded to every governor under the Texas Constitution.” She may have a point.

The Texas Constitution gives the governor discretion to decide when to sign and when to veto a bill, as well as discretion to veto individual line-items in an appropriation bill. Though the state legislature probably could limit this veto power in extreme cases — if a state governor literally sold his veto to wealthy interest groups, for example, the legislature could almost certainly make that a crime — a law that cuts too deep into the governor’s veto power raises serious separation of powers concerns. Imagine that the legislature passed a law prohibiting Democratic governors from vetoing restrictions on abortion, or prohibiting Republican governors from vetoing funding for Planned Parenthood. Such laws would rework the balance of power between the executive and the legislature established by the state constitution, and they would almost certainly be unconstitutional.

So an important question facing whichever court is tasked with trying Perry’s case, shall be whether a law preventing Perry from using strong-arm tactics to push out a genuinely compromised public official is an unconstitutional restriction on his discretion as governor or a valid means of reigning in corruption. This is not likely to be an easy question for the judges, and potentially, justices, who are called upon to resolve it.

This indictment, whether he is found guilty or not, should eliminate this dipshit from getting to the white house.

Martha Raddatz, host of ABC’s This Week, grilled Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) Sunday about the growing number of unaccompanied children coming to the United States from Latin America from Central America seeking asylum. When Perry insisted the issue is solely one of border security, Raddatz quickly debunked his talking points.

Perry blamed the influx of children on President Obama, complaining that there are not enough border patrol agents along the border between Texas and Mexico (despite agents monitoring every mile of the border every day). Raddatz pushed back, noting that the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 requires that those seeking refugee status from Central American countries receive due process:





Despite Perry’s suggestion, President Obama did not create the migrant children influx. The current process of dealing with unaccompanied children from countries other than Mexico was set by the Bush administration, according to Dara Lind at Vox. Under the law, the Border Patrol agency is required to take in these children, screen and vaccinate them, then turn them over to the Department of Health of Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).

As Raddatz noted, the Customs and Border Protection Agency launched an ad campaign last week aimed at discouraging child refugees from coming to the United States and has stepped up efforts to deport those who do. He also requested last week that Congress make changes to the law to expedite deportation decisions.

Rick Perry was on Fox News discussing the recent dustup between anti-federal government zealots and the BLM, including this unfounded report that the BLM is going to confiscate privately owned lands in Texas.

He's obviously looking to secure the Oath Keeper and Militia vote by claiming the Bundys were forced into the position of using force because it's the Bureau of Land Management that's acting outside the law.

Everyone knows that Bundy is lying about his claims of "ancestral rights" on his property since his family didn't own the land until 1948. And we also know that he's violating multiple court orders and has refused to pay grazing fees for decades while all the other ranchers are doing just that.

A federal judge has sided with reproductive rights advocates to declare one of Texas’ new abortion restrictions unconstitutional, ensuring that one of the provisions in a sweeping new anti-choice law will not take effect this week.

U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel heard the case last week and had promised to issue a ruling before the bill, HB 2, was scheduled to take go into place on Tuesday. Texas’ GOP-led legislature enacted HB 2 over the summer, after the dramatic debate over the proposed restrictions was elevated to the national stage. All eyes were on Texas after state Sen. Wendy Davis  filibustered the bill for 11 hours straight during a special legislative session in June. Less than 24 hours after Davis successfully blocked the bill, however, Gov. Rick Perry called yet another special session to force the legislation through.

In September, more than a dozen women’s health providers sued the state to block several of HB 2′s provisions from taking effect. Their challenge specifically concerned the provisions requiring abortion clinics to obtain admitting privileges at local hospitals — a medically unnecessary requirement that ultimately forces clinics to close when they’re unable to comply — and requiring doctors to use an outdated protocol to administer the abortion pill. They pointed out that the combination of those two restrictions would have “catastrophic” effects on abortion access in the state.

In his opinion, Yeakel noted that the “admitting-privileges provision is without a rational basis and places a substantial obstacle in the path of a woman seeking an abortion of a nonviable fetus.” Similar logic has led several federal judges to block identical provisions in other states. Yeakel did not completely strike down the provision related to medication-induced abortions, determining that women whose lives are at risk should be able to follow the off-label procedure for taking the abortion pill.

The ruling also does not affect several of the other provisions in Texas’ omnibus law, such as the requirement that abortion clinics need to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers — which won’t take effect until 2014 — or the ban that outlaws abortion procedures after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Women’s health advocates have estimated that taken together, the harsh new regulations could force the vast majority of the state’s clinics to close, leaving more than 22,000 Texas women without any safe options for terminating a pregnancy. They warn that the law will force more low-income women to cross the border into Mexico to obtain illegal and unsafe abortion-inducing drugs. Striking the admitting privileges provision will help somewhat improve this situation, but abortion rights activists have already vowed to keep fighting the rest of HB 2.

I am a firm believer in striking down all the anti-abortion rhetoric and laws, if it's not your abortion, it's none of your business, and it should never ever be regulated by a group of old pasty white men. In the retro world of the archaic GOP, women still take a back seat when it comes to controlling their own bodies. Without any safety precautions its a dangerous ride indeed. RICK PERRY PROVES HE'S NOT DONE WITH STUPID

Politico reported Tuesday evening that Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s administration is in negotiations with the Obama White House to accept about $100 million in federal money to implement an Obamacare Medicaid program to help elderly and disabled Americans.

Perry has been a heated opponent of the health law. He refused to accept $100 billion in federal funding to expand Texas’ Medicaid program under Obamacare, which could have helped 1.5 million poor Texans afford basic health benefits. As recently as April, Perry essentially called the expansion a joke. “Seems to me April Fool’s Day is the perfect day to discuss something as foolish as Medicaid expansion, and to remind everyone that Texas will not be held hostage by the Obama administration’s attempt to force us into the fool’s errand of adding more than a million Texans to a broken system,” said Perry.

Now, Perry is seeking federal dollars for Texas’ Medicaid program anyway.

The Affordable Care Act grants state funding to expand a program called Community First Choice, which aims to improve the community-based medical services available to disabled and elderly Americans. The wildly popular program is administered through Medicaid and could prevent thousands of disabled and older Americans from being uprooted from their homes and into a long-term care facility for their treatments. Approximately 12,000 Texans could take advantage of it in the first year alone.

Perry spokespeople emphasized to Politico that the governor’s support for the program — and the Medicaid funds that make it possible — shouldn’t come as a surprise and doesn’t change his position on the Affordable Care Act.

“Long before Obamacare was forced on the American people, Texas was implementing policies to provide those with intellectual disabilities more community options to enable them to live more independent lives, at a lower cost to taxpayers,” said the spokesperson in a statement. “The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will continue to move forward with these policies because they are right for our citizens and our state, regardless of whatever funding schemes may be found in Obamacare.”

Advocates for the poor and disabled who support expanding Community First Choice under Obamacare were apprehensive to even talk about the program’s relation to the health law out of fear that Texas officials would back out of their funding bid over political considerations.

“It would be worse than a shame if Texas’s moving ahead with [Community First Choice and Balancing Incentive Program] policies — both are from the ACA — was hurt as the result of scrutiny from a press inquiry,” one Texas advocate told Politico.

Maybe it's high time for two Americas. One for Texas and the haters of the US Government, and a separate one for people who don't leave their brothers and sisters out in the cold to die - to line the pockets of corporations.

Most Talibangelicals speak with a forked tongue, Perry is no different. It seems the only talent needed to be the governor is being able to talk out of both sides of your mouth and your ass the same time.

With regards to Perry's "intellectual disabilities" comment, is there a more intellectually challenged Governor in these United States than Perry? Me thinks not!

In case you missed it yesterday, the state of Texas upped its ignorance and stupidly to a level that is matched by.......none!

Yesterday, Texas feared for its life, so much so that it banned weapons of mass destruction from entering the state capitol - so that its state law makers could conduct the toughest proposed draconian abortion laws this country has to offer.

“We have beefed up security today,” said Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, speaking from the floor of the Texas Senate this afternoon. “We will not tolerate any outbursts.”

Before entering the states capitol to view the proceedings, security guards searched for these weapons of mass destruction. These weapons where not guns, no, as astounding at this sounds, guns where allowed into the state capitol. The destructive weapon that had the Talibangelicals crapping their depends - none other than the dreaded "Tampon". Yes that's right, a feminine product used during menstrual cycles.

Speaking of salt in the wound. This extra slap in the face - is yet another stake in the heart of women's rights.

I have said on many occasions, that nothing is beyond the pale of these disgusting humans that call themselves "American Patriots", conservatives and Republicans. Patriots of what, ignorance, racism, of putting the boot on the neck of women, minorities and the poor?

Ho Lee Fuk! Where in the hell did this "American" train fall off its rails? What does is say about the morphing of intelligence in humans, when guns are allowed into churches, grocery stores, and capitol buildings, and yet something as innocent as a tampon, suddenly becomes a dangerous weapon. Again Ho Lee Fuk!

If Rick Perry, a C minus college student, can be trusted with making his own healthcare decisions, why the hell can’t my A+ college graduated daughter do the same? Pro-life my ass. Perry is about as pro-life as any governor who has presided over hundreds of executions. Which is to say Perry is about 250 executions short of being pro-life. And for the record, pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion. Being pro-choice means you trust women to make the right decisions for themselves and their families when it comes to healthcare.
And Rick Perry might not be running for governor again, but those two morons Abbott and Costello… I mean Abbott and Dewhurst are and they make Perry look almost sane. So this fight isn't over. I’m in this for the long run. Are you with me Wendy?

Texas women might have lost the battle but we sure as hell plan to win the war. And they can pry the tampon from my cold, dead hands. I mean it. Really.

With his announcement Monday that he will not seek an unprecedented fourth full term as Governor of Texas, Rick Perry (Talibangelical) will retire from the office in January 2015. Unfortunately, Perry shall leave behind a record of right-wing extremism that few shall ever match.

Rick Perry is a special kind of stupid, unparalleled by any state Governor on record.

Below via Thinkprogess, are nine of the "best" moments from his 13 years as governor and his “oops” 2012 presidential campaign:

He allowed Texas to become the nation’s worst polluter. Texas under Perry has led the nation in carbon dioxide emissions and is home to five of the ten worst mercury emitting power plants in the country. Rather than try to do something about this, Perry sued the federal government to try to avoid complying an EPA ruling that the state was in violation of the Clean Air Act. A proud climate change denier, Perry called the 2010 BP oil spill an “act of God” while speaking at a trade association funded by BP. And his solution to the nation’s economic ills in 2011: more oil drilling.

 He executed a likely innocent man and impeded an investigation into the matter. In 2004, Cameron Todd Willingham was executed in Huntsville, Texas after being convicted of arson and the murder of his three children. Despite significant evidence that arson had not caused the fire (thus exonerating Willingham), Perry refused to grant a stay of execution. Five years after Willingham was executed, a report from a Texas Forensic Science Commission investigator found that the fire could not have been arson. As the commission prepared to hear testimony from the investigator in October 2009, Perry fired and replaced three of its members, forcing an indefinite delay in the process. With a record of executing juveniles and mentally disabled, Perry said in a 2011 GOP presidential debate that he had “never struggled” at all with his decisions to administer the death penalty to more than 230 people.

He actively sought to dismantle Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Perry argued that Texas and other states should be able to opt out of federal entitlements like Medicaid and Social Security — even though such a move would actually cost his own state’s economy billions of dollars. Despite their popularity and success, he called these programs and Medicare “Ponzi schemes,” and suggested they are actually unconstitutional. 

He consistently backed legislation to restrict women’s reproductive rights. Perry has made news in recent weeks for his embarrassing attacks on State Senator Wendy Davis (D) and his efforts to ram through a likely unconstitutional bill to shut down the vast majority of Texas clinics that provide abortion. But his attacks on women’s reproductive choice are nothing new; in 2011 he pushed for and signed “emergency legislation” to require women to have unnecessary sonograms prior to abortions. 

He demonized LGBT Texans and worked to increase legal discrimination against them. Perry was staunch defender of Texas’ unconstitutional anti-sodomy law which criminalized the private consensual sexual behavior of adults. After the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2003 ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, Perry called ban “appropriate,” and blasted the Court decision as the result of “nine oligarchs in robes.” As a presidential candidate, he ran a shockingly anti-gay ad, blasting open service by gay and lesbian members of the Armed Services as part of President Obama’s “war on religion.” He vocally opposed the Boy Scouts of America’s half-measure allowing openly gay Scouts but not leaders, claiming the tiny step “contradicts generations of tradition in the name of political correctness.” Even in his speech Monday, he proudly boasted that Texas had defended “the sanctity of marriage” by writing discrimination into the state’s constitution. 

He backed nullification of federal laws and even raised the prospect of secession. Perry rose to national prominence in 2009 when he threatened to have Texas secede from the United States. “If Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that,” Perry told reporters after a Tea Party event. He also signed nullification legislation — a state law that portends to undo federal law, despite the Constitution’s clear guarantee of federal supremacy — as governor, the likes of which were used by secessionists in the 19th Century. 

He refused to let the federal government provide healthcare for low-income Texans, despite the highest rate of uninsured residents in the country. Health care in Texas is abysmal. More than 25 percent of Texans — 6,234,900 people and growing — lack health coverage, the highest of any state in the country. However, when Obamacare was passed and offered millions of dollars in federal money to expand Medicaid and cover poor Texans, Perry rejected the offer even though it wouldn't cost Texas a dime for at least three years. Despite his state’s awful track record on covering low-income residents, Perry claimed that Texas has the “best health care in the country.” 

He vetoed bipartisan Equal Pay legislation to protect Texas women. Though women, on average, continue to earn 77 cents for every dollar men make, Perry vetoed legislation that would have helped women fight discrimination. The bill, HB 950, which passed the Republican-held Texas legislature, would have built on the federal Lilly Ledbetter Act. Perry, worrying that the bill would lead to regulations, vetoed the measure. 

He called for repeal of the 16th and 17th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, to end popular election of Senators and the federal income tax. In his book Fed Up!, Perry said that both the 16th and 17th Amendments were “mistaken” and should be repealed. The 16th Amendment allows the federal government to collect income taxes and accounts for 45 percent of all revenue, while the 17th Amendment allows voters, rather than state legislatures, to choose their U.S. senators. Perry opposed both amendments, saying they were merely passed in “a fit of populist rage.” 

In his announcement, Perry noted, “Our responsibility remains to the next generation of Texans, who will inherit a state of our making. We alone are responsible for the kind of Texas that will greet them.”

Rick Perry was designed to piss Americans off, just like the plethora of other Talibangelicals running rampant in our local, state and national government. Its what they do best.

Rick Perry is the village idiot who never got reigned in - who, if he had any true ethics or empathy - he'd forever be apologizing for his ignorance- which has run rampant for much of his adult life! Perry is a true visionary and leader of the saying; " diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain."

I was really hoping that Rick Perry's secessionist dreams would have come to fruition before he quits. Unfortunately this looks like a dud. Perry believes that freedom is the greatest blessing that God can give someone - anyone who doesn't have a vagina that is. Perry states that has a "deep sense of humility" - yes this is true - that only a man like he can know exactly when life begins.

The argument against women accessing reproductive services or benefits has never been about protecting the safety for the women or the unborn. It's always been about controlling women and their place in society. Without power to control their reproduction, and without resources available after childbirth, women lose power and the ability to influence changes in their own society.

This is why the US continues to rank at the bottom of first-world countries for maternal mortality, despite claiming to restrict abortions and public programs for the benefit of the people. As Hilary Clinton so adequately stated, "If you want to know how strong a country's health system is, look at the well-being of its mothers."

TEXAS GETS RADICAL ON ABORTION

More than 600 women’s health advocates crowded into Texas’ state capitol building on Sunday night, hoping to prevent a vote on a package of abortion restrictions before the state’s special session ends early this week. Ultimately, however, their efforts were unsuccessful. In the early hours of Monday morning, Republicans used their majority to cut off debate and give preliminary approval to Senate Bill 5, an omnibus measure that would force most of the abortion clinics in the Lone Star state to close their doors.

SB 5 combines several abortion restrictions that failed to advance during Texas’ regular session into one sweeping bill, and would ultimately leave Texas women with just five abortion clinics left in the entire state. Gov. Rick Perry (R) forced a last-minute vote on several pieces of anti-abortion legislation, including SB 5, to give them another chance. Since the current special session operates under different procedural rules, it’s more difficult for Democrats to block legislation from advancing.

On Thursday night, nearly 800 protesters registered to testify against SB 5. Their “people’s filibuster” stretched on for 12 hours and successfully delayed the House from voting on the restrictive measure. They tried again on Sunday night, filling the capitol rotunda with protesters as Democrats continued delaying a vote for 15 hours.

“Women are not going to tolerate the constant chipping away of their rights, we are not going to be bullied,” Rep. Senfronia Thompson (D) said on Sunday night in reference to the legislature’s attempt to push through last-minute abortion restrictions. “We are soldiers in the army of women’s rights, and while today we may be outnumbered and out gunned, our cause is just and we shall prevail.”

But around four in the morning, Republicans cut off the ongoing debate so they could finally force a vote, a decision that the Associated Press characterized as a “highly unusual and partisan move.” SB 5 won preliminary approval with a 97-33 vote. The bill still needs final approval from the House, and then it will head to a Senate vote before the special session comes to a close on midnight on Tuesday. There’s still a chance that it can be blocked if Senate Democrats successfully filibuster the vote on Tuesday.

After the House vote on SB 5, protesters lined the stairs of the Capitol rotunda and chanted, “Shame them to their faces” and “shame them for what they've done.” But State Rep. Jessica Farrar (D) Houston, the chairwoman of the House women’s health caucus, reminded the crowd of protesters that their efforts weren't in vain. “It really mattered what you did,” Farrar told the protesters, pointing out that successfully delaying the action on SB 5 will allow the Senate to attempt a filibuster.

Republicans have been sharply criticized for their attempt to push through abortion restrictions under special legislative rules after every single anti-abortion bill was successfully blocked during this year’s regular session. “Everything about the process related to these abortion regulation bills has smelled like partisan politics,” Farrar said during the late-night debate on SB 5.

Proponents of the abortion restrictions say that they are necessary measures to help protect women’s health and safety. But major medical groups in Texas — including the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Hospital Association and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists — have all come out in opposition to SB 5, and have sent letters to state lawmakers asking them to vote against it.

In less than six months more Americans were killed with guns than soldiers killed during decade-long Iraq War.

The number of gun deaths in the U.S. since the Newtown elementary school massacre has exceeded the total number of U.S. troops killed in the Iraq war.

According to a tally of gun deaths from Slate, the number of people killed since the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary is now 4,502. The number of U.S. armed forces killed during the Iraq war was 4,488, [numbers updated 12:33 pm] according to the Defense Department.

This comparison of the five months since the tragedy that redefined the debate for further gun control in this country and the nine-year conflict the U.S. has recently ended is now being used by Americans United for Change, a progressive political group. Already, the group has targeted several GOP lawmakers, including Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, to support background checks, among other gun-control measures.

The American Taliban successfully stalled gun-control legislation, arguing that further measures would not prevent gun violence but merely stifle the Second Amendment rights of lawful Americans. But Democratic lawmakers and progressive groups have signaled that they will continue this fight.

I refer to the statement issued by this Einstein - that its their "GOD given right" to bear arms. Please, anyone, point to a book, a verse, a quote in the bible where is says gun hugging is a GOD given right.

I make the point, that with unlettered delusional folks like this individual, and you gun nuts have the stones to wonder why I want your guns? If you're sending ricin laden letters to leaders of these great United States, you're the last one I want gun hugging!

Both these stories point to a bigger problem within these United States. There are only 4 million associates of the Not Relative Anymore [NRA] gun huggers society. Certainly with over 340 million Americans, our voice and actions can be bigger than the gun hugger. The bold emphasizing mention in this blog is, "in six months, guns have killed more than the entire Iraq war" [ten years]. C'mon America, we're better than this!

Opps, We Killed The Wrong Guy

Last year, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) admitted that he “never struggled . . . at all” with whether someone his state executed might have been innocent. Yet a new book written by Columbia Law Professor James Liebman shows that Carlos DeLuna, executed by Texas in 1989, was innocent. According to Liebman, DeLuna was wrongfully convicted and executed for the murder of Wanda Lopez following a botched investigation. DeLuna and the man believed to have committed the murder, Carlos Hernandez, looked so much alike that they were mistaken for each other in photographs by family members. However, DeLuna, who was clean-shaven and wearing a white shirt, did not fit the description of the eyewitness who said that the murderer was wearing flannel and had a mustache. Police arrested DeLuna anyway and failed to do a formal lineup. Police also failed to formally examine the crime scene, ignoring foot and fingerprints, not taking blood samples, and allowing the scene to be cleaned by gas station employees.

Not only did DeLuna maintain his innocence throughout the investigation and his subsequent incarceration, he told investigators that he knew Hernandez had committed the crime. DeLuna was ignored, and during his trial prosecutors ridiculed his claim:

They told the jury that police had looked for a “Carlos Hernandez” after his name had been passed to them by DeLuna’s lawyers, without success. They had concluded that Hernandez was a fabrication, a “phantom” who simply did not exist. The chief prosecutor said in summing up that Hernandez was a “figment of DeLuna’s imagination”

By the end of a single day the investigator had uncovered evidence that had eluded scores of Texan police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers and judges over the six years between DeLuna’s arrest and execution. Carlos Hernandez did indeed exist.

Hernandez had a criminal background that included several violent assaults. He eventually died in prison after attacking his girlfriend with a knife.

DeLuna is not the only man to be wrongfully convicted and executed by the state of Texas. There is persuasive evidence that Cameron Todd Willingham, convicted in the death of his three daughters and executed in 2004, was innocent and DNA tests have undermined the evidence used to convict and execute Claude Jones. Texas continues to lead the nation in executions, accounting for over one-third of US executions since 1976, despite the fact that there were 41 DNA exonerations there from 2002-2011.

Moreover, DeLuna’s case highlights the difficulties inherent in the permanence of the death penalty — despite conservative efforts to dismiss these difficulties. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said in 2005 that there was not “a single case—not one—in which it is clear that a person was executed for a crime he did not commit.” It’s now hard to doubt that’s not true.

Once again, a compelling argument against the death penalty. Texas murders over a dozen inmates each year and many of them had incompetent lawyers or overzealous prosecutors. Additionally, the death penalty costs around $137 million a year whereas keeping the same prisoners in prison for life would cost around $11.5 million.(California statistics).

Most importantly, the death penalty is not an effective deterrent. If it was states with capital punishment would have lower crime rates than those without. The facts are reversed, 10 of the 12 states without capital punishment have homicide rates below the national average according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Lastly it is morally wrong to compound one crime with another!

BACK TO IRAQ?

Rick Perry would re-invade Iraq as President! HUH?


In December, the last American troops left Iraq, ending an unnecessary war that has lasted nearly a decade. Thousands of Americans were killed in the country and trillions of dollars has been spent on a war that never should have happened in the first place. But Rick Perry isn’t ready to end the loss of American lives and treasure.

During Saturday’s GOP Debate in New Hampshire, Perry declared that if he were elected President, he would re-invade Iraq and continue the war even though the Iraqis don’t want us there. Perry also falsely blamed President Obama for withdrawing the troops:

“I would send troops back into Iraq. Because I will tell you, I think we start talking with the Iraqi individuals there. The idea that we allow the Iranians to come back into Iraq and take over that country, with all of the treasure — in both blood and money — that we have spent in Iraq, because this president wants to kowtow to his liberal leftist base and move out those men and women.”

“He could have renegotiated that time frame. I think it is a huge error for us. We are going to see Iran, in my opinion, move back in at literally the speed of light. They’re going to move back in, and all the work we’ve done, every young man that has lost his life in that country will have been for nothing because we’ve got a president who does not understand what’s going on in that region.”

Such an irresponsible action.. This withdraw date was set by George W. Bush in 2008 and President Obama did indeed try to renegotiate with Iraq to keep troops in the country, but Iraq rejected the deal. Re-igniting the war in Iraq would be like one needing a hole in the head. It has cost America too many young men and women, and cost us trillions of dollars, which has put us in the economic mess we are trying to fix among other things. The last thing America needs is more war. The war in Iraq is over. Teapublicans need to get over it! Maybe we can trump up so more weapons of mass destruction to aide Perry's war plan.

Rick Perry's Plan

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has staked his presidential hopes on a radical revamping of Washington’s political structure, reshaping the tax code, making the legislature part-time, enacting term limits on the Supreme Court, and closing multiple government agencies.

Perry took his radical new vision for America to a new level the other night at the Iowa FAMILY Leader presidential forum. Going against the Constitution, centuries of American history, and the wishes of our nation’s founders, Perry claimed that the United States military should not be “micromanaged” by civilians and needed military commanders to be “truly in charge”

PERRY: There is a time and a place for us to intervene, and intervene militarily. But when we intervene militarily, we best make the decision on how we are going to win and how we are going to win convincingly and quickly, send those young men and women with the equipment to win. Don’t let some congressman sitting in an air-conditioned office in Washington DC deciding what the rules of engagement are. … And for us to micromanage them, in a civilian way, without their commanders truly in charge, is absolutely irresponsible and as commander-in-chief of this country I will not let it happen.

By design, the U.S. military has always been under civilian control. While the president acts as the military’s civilian commander-in-chief, Congress has the Constitutionally-mandated authority to apportion military funding and approve any declaration of war. The military’s nuclear weapons, meanwhile, are owned and controlled by the civilian Department of Energy (which Perry, incidentally, wants to abolish).

The civilian structure of the military Perry has no use for wasn’t an accident — it is the norm in liberal democracies and what America’s Founding Fathers wanted. As Samuel Adams wrote in 1768, “Even when there is a necessity of the military power, within a land, a wise and prudent people will always have a watchful and jealous eye over it.” The founders feared giving too much power to military could lead to an oppressive federal government, the specter of which Perry has built his entire political ideology against.

Not only is Perry’s Constitutional history lacking, but his knowledge of current events is too. American military commanders — whom Perry asserts aren’t currently in charge — back the timetable to begin removing troops from Afghanistan at the end of the year.

Rick Perry Just Doesn’t Get It

Ignoring world wars and 9/11, Perry says ‘the world has never been as dangerous as it is today’ because of Obama.

Appearing on Bill Bennett’s radio show yesterday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) lambasted President Obama’s foreign policy as “incredibly naive,” saying, “the world has never been as dangerous as it is today, because of this administration”:

PERRY: So, you’ve got a president of the United States that I think is either incredibly naive about foreign policy or I don’t know else to take out of it. They’re aimless, they’re wavering, and I know this — the world has never been as dangerous as it is today, because of this administration’s lack of focus on dealing with these rogue nations.

It’s unclear how Perry sees today as more dangerous than any other point in the nation’s history, which has experienced foreign invasion, two world wars, the threat of nuclear annihilation during the Cold War, and the 9/11 terror attacks. Moreover, the number of armed conflicts globally is low and falling. It’s also unclear how Perry thinks — the day after the Obama administration foiled a terror plot from Iran — that the president has been too soft on rogue nations. It’s hard to see how Perry isn’t the “incredibly naive” one here.

Rick Perry’s foreign policy is based on a directive from God.



Yesterday, Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) held a news conference in New York City where he attacked President Obama’s Middle East policies and called upon the United States to be more stridently supportive of the actions of the Israeli government.

At one point, a reporter asked Perry how he views the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lens of his Christian faith. Perry replied by saying that as a “Christian,” he has a “clear directive to support Israel”:

PERRY: As a Christian I have a clear directive to support Israel, from my perspective its pretty easy both as an American and a Christian. I am going to stand with Israel.

In 2009, Perry struck a similar tone talking with the Weekly Standard. “My faith requires me to support Israel,” he said. One has to wonder what other foreign policy initiatives Perry feels he is directed to take from the Bible.

Presidential Candidate Rick Perry And Merck Tighter Than The Governor Leads On

During the CNN (tea bag) Republican debate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) was forced to defend his executive order to administer the vaccine Gardasil to young women in his state. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) in particular said the effort was an example of “crony capitalism,” and that Perry was too cozy with the drug company poised to benefit from the decision. Perry dismissed the comment, stating: “The company was Merck, and it was a $5,000 contribution that I had received from them. I raised about $30 million. And if you’re saying that I can be bought for $5,000, I’m offended.”

Regardless of the debate over administering the vaccine, there is no doubt that Perry grossly misrepresented the influence of Merck in his administration. For one thing, Perry has actually accepted $29,500 from the company’s PAC, and the Republican Governor Association, under Perry’s watch, took in $350,000 from Merck since 2006. Moreover, Mike Toomey, an Austin lobbyist that represented Merck during the Gardasil decision, has promised to raise $55 million to back Perry’s presidential bid using an independent so-called SuperPAC.

The Merck connections don’t end there. A review of fundraising documents reveals that Perry’s big “Washington Kickoff” fundraiser, scheduled for later this month and already billed as his first significant event with K Street lobbyists and Beltway power brokers, is hosted by a longtime Merck lobbyist. Event host Jeff MacKinnon’s firm served as a registered lobbying agent for Merck from 2005 to 2010, and has pulled in approximately $860,000 from Merck in exchange for lobbying Congress on “drug safety” issues. MacKinnon’s firm stopped lobbying for Merck starting this year.

MacKinnon is among several top lobbyists hosting the event, which takes place on September 27 at the Willard Hotel in Washington DC. Perry strategists told the National Journal that events like the one with MacKinnon will raise $2 million to $4 million for the campaign by the end of the year.

Another interesting note about Merck’s ties with Perry and his administration relates to third party allies. Merck is a major contributor to powerful Washington third party groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (providing $725,000 in donations last year) and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America trade group (providing $7,046,747 in 2010 and $12,767,272 in 2009). Perry has appeared at multiple Chamber events over the years, and it is likely these groups will again play an important role in the 2012 election.

Women in Government (WIG), a nonprofit with close ties to Merck that has pushed the Gardasil vaccine in multiple states, has enjoyed a friendly relationship with the Perry administration. Not only did WIG consult with the Perry administration on the Gardasil decision, but Perry’s wife Anita has addressed the group in the past. According to Merck’s disclosures, the company continues to provide funds to WIG.

Social Security and the Ponzi Experiment

Texas Gov. Rick Perry emphatically states that Social Security is a “Ponzi Scheme”.

Sometimes campaign spin works to distance a candidate from his controversial past statements. And sometimes the candidate comes back and makes a hash of all the work his staff has done for him.

We could be witnessing the latter scenario when it comes to Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) and one of the nation's most popular government programs. Last week, Perry's campaign spokesperson took to the Wall Street Journal to help back Perry off the less election-friendly sections of his book, Fed Up!. That includes Perry's suggestion that Social Security is an unconstitutional scheme which should be privatized post-haste.  

Over this past weekend, Perry walked all that back and fired off some more fiery rhetoric about the perils of the entitlement program that most Americans do not want to see changed.

"It is a Ponzi scheme for these young people," Perry said in Iowa, mimicking his pre-presidential campaign language on the subject of Social Security:

"The idea that they're working and paying into Social Security today, that the current program is going to be there for them, is a lie," Perry added. "It is a monstrous lie on this generation, and we can't do that to them."

Charles Ponzi, an Italian immigrant, started this first such scheme in Boston in 1916. He convinced some people to allow him to invest their money, but he never made any real investments. He just took the money from later investors and gave it to the earlier investors, paying them a handsome profit on what they originally paid in. He then used the early investors as advertisements to get more investors, using their money to pay a profit to previous investors, and so on.

To keep paying a profit to previous investors, Ponzi had to continue to find more and more new investors. Eventually, he couldn't expand the number of new investors fast enough and the system collapsed. Because he never made any real investments, he had no funds to pay back the newer investors. They lost all the money they "invested" with Ponzi.

Ponzi was convicted of fraud and sent to prison for two years. When he came out, he returned to Italy, where he became a top economic adviser to Benito Mussolini.

Quoting NFTOS editor and Chief Roger West…..”Just like Ponzi's plan, The pundits along with the CATO institute  (co-founder is Charles Koch) state that Social Security does not make any real investments -- it just takes money from later "investors," or taxpayers, to pay benefits to earlier, now retired, taxpayers. Like Ponzi, Social Security will not be able to recruit new "investors" fast enough to continue paying promised benefits to previous investors. Because each year there are fewer young workers relative to the number of retirees, Social Security will eventually collapse, just like Ponzi's scheme.”



What's more, Perry also said "I haven't backed off anything in my book." Not surprisingly, Democrats jumped all over the quotes. Perry's re-embrace of the Social Security-as-Ponzi scheme thing is likely to endear him further to the tea party types who already support his campaign in big numbers. But polls have shown even the tea party doesn't want to see cuts to Social Security, showing just how dangerous grabbing onto this particular political third rail can be.

So Perry's got a dilemma -- does he stick to his guns on Fed Up!, giving him the sort of "genuine" cred conservative voters crave in a primary candidate? Or does he go the way his staff seems to be suggesting, which frees him from attack-ads-in-a-can like the Ponzi Scheme line? For now it looks like Perry's more interested in staying "real" than becoming more electable.

TREASON I SAY

Speaking recently in Iowa, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) said that “printing more money” is “almost treasonous”:

If this guy (Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke) prints more money between now and the election, I dunno what y’all would do to him in Iowa but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas. Printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history is almost treasonous in my opinion.

Accusing the Chairman of the Federal Reserve of treason is not only inappropriate, but also betrays a certain ignorance of history on the part of Governor Perry. Under Reagan, after all, the Fed was happy to increase the monetary base.

Governor Perry has drawn fire for his statement from conservatives, including none other than Karl Rove, who said that Perry’s remark was “not Presidential.” “You don’t accuse the chairman of the federal reserve of being a traitor to his country,” Rove told Fox News. Other former Bush aides have made similar criticisms.

But the Bush camp didn’t seem to mind such language back in 2000, when Perry — then Bush’s Lieutenant Governor — said that supporters of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) were “almost treasonous“:

Lt. Gov. Rick Perry, casting his Republican primary ballot early Monday, plugged George W. Bush’s presidential candidacy and urged Texans to join him in voting for the Texas governor.

“Wherever your political philosophy might be, if you’re not for George Bush being the next president of the United States, I consider that to be almost treasonous if you’re a Texan,” Perry said.

It’s instructive to consider how Perry responded in 2000 versus today. Back then, Perry’s aides moderated his language. His spokesman informed the Associated Press that the Lieutenant Governor was simply being “humorous.” No such excuse was offered today. Greg Sargent reports that, given another bite at the apple, the Perry camp “is not disavowing the implied threat in his original remarks.”
